------------------------- Eric Fry, reporting from an office overlooking the New York Stock Exchange... $60 crude oil – a phenomenon that has yet to celebrate its first birthday – is already altering the energy landscape. It is unleashing a sweeping global pursuit for viable alternatives. This pursuit is inspiring groundbreaking research and innovation – a fact that will certainly yield a broad array of "alternative energy" sources and technologies. Forward-looking investors, therefore, will want to continuously explore the alternative-energy industry for compelling investment opportunities. That's why we polled the "Rude" faithful for their favorite alternative-energy plays...And that's why we'll continue to monitor this industry. A few "Rude" readers expanded the parameters of "alternative energy" to accommodate their recommendations...and we're glad they did. See for yourself... --- Special --- In November, a tiny $1.50 company from California joined the ranks of IBM, Apple, Sony and Toyota, by winning the 2005 World Technology Award. Fry Coal is abundant and cheap...and filthy – a quality that would not naturally commend this fuel source as an "alternative energy." Nevertheless, one Rude reader suggested a "clean coal" investments for our consideration. Another suggested a variation on natural gas. Since we find these ideas compelling, we will happily divulge them.
Coal is certainly not a classic "alternative energy," but the continental United States possesses a 250-year supply of this dirty black fuel source. So any process that renders this energy source cleaner or more versatile, or both, should possess compelling investment potential. A couple readers nominated Headwaters as an attractive "clean coal" play... Coal and Wind: Headwater "Much as I enjoy clean renewal energy," one reader writes, "I don't see many good businesses in the space that I want to be a part owner of. That being said though, the dirty- coal-to-liquids market is an 'alternative' to the oil plays, and my favorite company there is Headwater (NYSE: HW). I'm sure others have written in about Headwater, as profitable companies in the alternative energy space, trading at reasonable multiples - are hard to find. So, I will not bore with the numbers, but simply cast one additional vote." Readers Dick Samuels concurs: "My vote for the best energy investment is Headwaters (HW). They have a great patented process for cleaning America's coal supply to make it environmentally friendly to burn in our power plants...dramatic reduction in emissions." Switching from coal to natural gas, reader Curtis Timm asserts, "Syntroleum Corp. (Nasdaq: SYNM) has a technology that, at today's prices, affordably converts natural gas to liquids like diesel fuel. Using their technology, small plants can be built which can convert the natural gas to portable liquid fuels in areas where there are no pipelines. They even can put such plant on a barge to convert natural gas from offshore gas wells and thus utilize natural gas that can't otherwise be transported because it would be rather impossible or uneconomic to lay a pipeline to these wells. This company has a pilot demonstration plant and has been working on this technology for close to 20 years. The conversion uses compressed air and is non-polluting." Coal and wind: Vestas Wind Systems Next up, one of Joel's countrymen writes, "G'day Joel, What about Vestas Wind Systems (VWS DC on Bloomberg), the Danish wind turbine producer. They seem to be getting all around the world (wind turbines here in Tasmania I think), and a potential takeover target by Shell (which Shell has denied). Do you know how we can buy this stock via ASX or the US exchanges? [Editor's note: Vestas trades over-the-counter in the U.S. under the symbol, VWSYF] Wind power is supposedly the cheapest form of alternative energy. Kind regards, Cameron"
Lastly, reader Jon Prober suggests, "For those who want to get some alternative energy sector exposure without taking on any single stock risk, may I suggest Powershares' Clean Energy ETF, ticker: PBW. It has classic alternative energy stock plays like Evergreen Solar, as well as many lesser- known ones. Powershares also has an interesting ETF formation protocol where it limits the value of any one stock in its ETFs. In this particular case no stock comprises more than 5% of the alternative energy ETF. Powershares also has a variety of other rare sector ETFs, including an oil exploration and production sub-sector – one that I, as an avid daily reckoning/rude awakening fan, love." Thanks again to all "Rude" readers for your contributions...Let's do it again sometime! [Joel's Note: From ethanol to solar energy to the coal in America's own back yard...We've certainly heard some great ideas over the last couple of days. The future of alternative energy will undoubtedly be an interesting, and in some cases highly profitable, new realm. Some investors will make a fortune.
